Background: We analyzed the performance of naming test in detail and the correlations between the score of naming test and neuropsychological test scores in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild Alzhiemer¡¯s disease (AD).
Methods: The subjects of this study were 69 patients with MCI and 33 patients with mild AD. We performed the general cognitive functions as well as the Korean version of Boston Naming Test (K-BNT), digit span test, Rey figure copy test (RCFT), Seoul Verbal Learning Test (SVLT), and frontal function tests. The detailed items of K-BNT were analyzed for the two subject groups, and the correlations between the score of K-BNT and those of neuropsychological test were examined.
Results: There were significant differences in the number of correct answers, the number of items of the semantic hint, the number of wrong answers after a semantic hint, the number of items of the phonemic hint, and the number of correct answers after two syllables in AD and MCI patients. A qualitative analysis of the incorrect responses to the K-BNT showed that both AD and MCI group exhibited semantic errors more than visuoperceptual and phonemic errors. Significant correlations were found with the mini-mental state examination, global deterioration scale, clinical dementia rating, digit span, SVLT delayed recall, RCFT and RCFT delayed recall, and Stroop test color reading items (p<0.01).
Conclusion: Our result suggests that semantic errors can gradually increase with the progress of cognitive disability in the precedent state of AD among patients with MCI.
